I’m Sally Prosser, a keen eater… of GOOD food…. and for me that’s about using the best, freshest, tastiest, seasonal ingredients cooked from scratch. Draw up a chair at my kitchen table, come with me to the market, meet people who grow and make our food; consider difficult choices about food (especially the impact of our food system) and generally have nerdy conversations about everything from obscure kitchen utensils to what’s in my pantry.

Why stay and browse?
From the moment I wake up I’m thinking about my next meal, I count myself very lucky to be able to do that with optimism. It seems like I’m not alone and you may be similarly obsessed. So perhaps I can inspire you with a simple recipe, something traditional from the UK, the Middle East or a family recipe discovered on my travels.
Food and our planet
Food production and water sourcing are major factors affecting our climate emergency. Making a change for the better is not always cut and dried, but by considering the impact of how we shop and eat we can try to make good decisions. Here, I share my journey, which is about doing my best. It’s not always easy but together we can help each other make the best choices for our well-being, food producers and the planet.
Travel stories
Getting to know the story behind food in other countries is a key to getting to understanding more about their culture and the way they live. Food is my compass when exploring new places – eating from small restaurants and street vendors, seeing how food is made, tasting traditional recipes, visiting markets and, if lucky, being invited into local people’s kitchens.
A little bit more
I know live on Dartmoor in Devon, UK (my home country) but I lived in the Middle East for over two decades so write about both and other places I explore, from a food angle of course. I also love food photography and styling, reading (especially cook books), the ever changing nature of social media and I’m happiest in hiking boots – so you’ll find a few posts about these topics too.
And yes I do love custard.

Excellent blog! Have just found it and am hungry now!! Live in Dubai and love cooking too – but family also not so passionate – but with all the variety and tastes surrounding us here in Dubai – that is slowly changing! Thanks for the info on the organic farm shop.
I have been desperate for someone to improve our fresh food (in our mad climate – I know that is hard) so am very impressed and in awe of the founder of this!
When my son wakes up – I shall go exploring and see if I can find it!!! Now what shall I cook…..
Thanks for nice feedback. I think we are so lucky to have this farm shop and things like the farmers market are steps in the right direction. It makes a huge difference to the way I cook when the ingredients are this fresh. Enjoy.

On a separate note, I’m also thinking of starting a food blogger’s group in Dubai, where bloggers come together once a month to either try out a new restaurant, do a potluck with their own homemade concoctions, or just sit around and talk food. 🙂 Do let me know if you’d be interested!

Do you have to blog to attend? I’ve been hoping to meet a group to stir up my passion for cooking and a group of bloggers sound great. Most of Dubai’s tourist food scene is disappointing but the hidden gems are what make it worthwhile. I’m also interested in attending some regular cooking classes and would love to hear if anyone has attended some worthwhile ones.
Hi Angus – Not sure what you mean about attending a blog. There is a group for food bloggers in Dubai called Famished in Arabia on Facebook. Don’t know of many cooking classes – there’s a nice icing course at Tavola on Jumeirah Beach Road or see my post about Green papaya salad about a school in Satwa. Good luck.

I love the English countryside; at least, what I’ve seen of it in my many favorite British TV shows and movies. (I watch so much more British than American TV that I find myself thinking in British terms and pronunciation sometimes.) So of course Dickens was my favorite author from about Jr. High school on. Then I discovered George MacDonald. I could go on and on. 🙂

Sally – it is so good to meet you! If you had not stopped by my blog first, I would not have known. Even though so many part of our lives are different, I am amazed at how much we share in common. But I guess that is how we are, as women. Probably so much in common, yet somehow modern life likes to highlight our differences. I like the positive tone to your work, it is my endless antidote to the negativity that can sometimes hang over us. I can relate to your cookbook obsession. My dining room is flanked with 2 shelves of books and a whole case is almost devoted to cookbooks. Similar to planting seedlings in the garden, I can’t bear to get rid of any. I like the look, the feel and the secrets they contain. Your children developing a very definite opinion about food and judging you accordingly is the way I like to view my own 2 experiments in parenting. I probably made them this way by giving them so much variety. I envy them growing up in my house, seems like a pretty fun childhood. I could go on and on…your list has inspired me to add that to my blog. Thanks for the great work.

We are a speciality bakery in Cornwall in the UK and looking to begin exporting our organic & speciality bread range. We also bake a wide selection of rolls and baguettes as well as sweet treats like chocolate brownies, saffron buns, bake well tarts etc. I was hoping to pick your brains with regards to potential distributors in Dubai that you think our products would more likely suit. I’d say just start and you’ll learn. Begin with really good soil – use natural compost (which you can make yourself), plant your seeds at the right time of year for your climate and in the right position, don’t use lots of chemicals – rely on natural solutions like companion planting. Ask local gardeners in your area for their advice too. If you’re in Dubai look up My Arabian Ahlmanack
