A gang of us sat out in the garden last night, eating curry and playing our top 5 cover versions that are better than the original. Lots of controversy I can tell you 😊 Which 5 would you choose? ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ P.S. This was dessert. ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Two days late posting for #eatcaptureshare challenge with @thelittleplantation Life got in the way ... This theme ‘twinning’ ⠀
Where are you and what’s the weather like? I’m in Dubai and the weather is fresh, a bit cloudy, overcast and windy (a novelty which I love). ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ There wasn’t a cloud in the bright blue sky as I looked out over the desert from a shaded terrace at @almaha_resort a short while ago. This dessert fused some classic Middle Eastern flavours - Arabic coffee panna cotta, saffron jelly, pistachio sablé, fig chutney and coffee foam. It didn’t hang around long on that plate I can tell you 😉 ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ This single plate is for Kimberly’s #eatcaptureshare challenge from @thelittleplantation ‘only child’. I used a 3/4 angle and a 50mm lens on low aperture to get that out of focus background. ⠀
Do you ever get stuck in a creative rut? The solution is to go and do something completely different. . . Yesterday @gulfphotoplus @fujifilmme day, an opportunity to learn from top photographers, took me out of my food silo and got my imagination working overtime. @nickfancher showed how you can create incredible portraits with minimal gear, @zarias has spurred me to take more people in my street photography (he has some hilarious covert strategies), @grudginglyadult makes video for social for top companies so her overview was a really different perspective and @holeinthefabric is compassionate and wise as well as creative, “Ideas are not fragile. They need to be punched hard to make sure they stand up.” . . Couldn’t resist the theatre of this chap from @projectchaiwala who while pouring his warming fragrant brew was keeping up a steady stream of chanting to lure new custom. . . What’s your best tip to revitalise your creative thinking? . . My entry for ‘blue’ @thelittleplantation #eatcaptureshare - explore the # to see loads of beautiful blue food shots. #adoremycupoftea
Rock dust light star. Listening to that Jamiroquai song as I piled this pavlova onto its precarious perch. It seemed apt - there’s something about the way the crisp crust cracks that reminds me of the surface of the moon. The margarita cream is rather lethally addictive and Hazel was hovering in hope that some would land in her direction. . . Anyway I’m going to see Jay Kay and gang for the fourth time next week so if you come round for a slice of this you know what the soundtrack will be 😉 . . White was the theme today for Kimberly’s @thelittleplantation #eatcaptureshare challenge. I hope you like it. @jamiroquaihq
While cycling home I could smell the gorgeous scent of these bunches of herbs and citrus fruit in my backpack. Inside the house, green is not my favourite colour. But green tastes, like sharp lime and medicinal mint, pull me like a pin to a magnet. I’ve got a huge glass of fresh mint and lime tea on my desk which is much easier to drink loads of than plain water. . 🍃 🍃 Deciding which of these images to share was agony. My daughter chose this one - swipe to see other contenders. Do you have this problem or are you very certain? Does it even matter in the scheme of things?! . 🍃 🍃 Green theme for #eatcaptureshare with @thelittleplantation #adoremycupoftea #igersdubai_food
I really miss being in the countryside. Visiting @almaha_resort this weekend, within an extensive desert conservation area, gave the same sense of getting away from it all and connecting with nature. There’s so much subtle beauty within the dunes and an incredibly delicate ecosystem. Courtney, one of the Al Maha rangers, gave us a fascinating insight into how they are preserving this unique landscape. . . . It’s hard to convey just how special this place is. It was just one of the stops this weekend on an ‘Epicurean Adventure’ with @foodiva and @theluxurycollection My stories show more and I’m sifting through acres of images for the blog - posts coming soon. KP and I are celebrating our 25th anniversary this year and it was like being on honeymoon. Where do you feel most connected with the natural world? . #whpcolorwheel #lensball
Can you imagine life without citrus fruits? it wasn’t until the Restoration that oranges were widely available in the UK. In London, they were sold to theatregoers by young women known as ‘orange wenches’, (who also peddled more metaphorical forms of fruitiness). Nell Gwyn, the mistress of Charles II, famously worked as an orange seller at a Covent Garden theatre. 🍊 🍊 I’m home after a glorious weekend on an ‘epicurean adventure’ A light, bright, crunchy salad is all I need for supper after feasting on a series of delectable menus. Will share more highlights in my stories once I’ve munched through this orange, carrot and red cabbage salad. The two tone carrots are from @rashed_organic_farm at @farmersmarketme , red cabbage also local and organic, and nasturtiums from my garden for a seasonal citrus capture for #eatcaptureshare with @thelittleplantation . #whpcolorwheel
Leafy ‘curly kale’ used to be picked from the garden, boiled like cabbage and served with a rich stew in the dead of winter in my younger days. I buy it from @farmersmarketme but I still prefer it cooked to raw. These micro greens from local producers @badiafarms are a good compromise. Do you like raw kale? . . Kale hash for @thelittleplantation #eatcaptureshare
At a friend’s house the other night, the husband was cooking a delicious slow cooked dish with many ingredients. “I will never chop an onion though” he said, “I buy them ready prepared.” I was shocked as it’s that basic food prep that acts like a warm blanket for me in the kitchen. A podcast playing, the house quiet, a chopping board and sharp knife in hand rhythmically peeling, coring, deseeding or dicing is a lovely way to unwind plus you have something to eat at the end of it. It’s the transformation of a handful of humble ingredients into something comforting that’s so satisfying. Or does this idea have you running away from the kitchen in horror? What helps you to unwind? 🔪 🔪 Four large onions, thinly sliced, cook very, very slowly until soft and just starting to caramelise, fresh sage from the garden, free range eggs from @farmersmarketme and a fair amount of fresh cream. Pour into a rather rustic all butter shortcrust pastry case. Gently fry smoked lardons until the fat starts to run and crisp. Dot over the top (half the top or leave out if you have vegetarian guests). Bake in the oven until firm on top and just set. My recipe for comfort (on blog later today). 📷 📷 @thelittleplantation Winter #eatcaptureshare challenge has begun and here’s my shot for the first theme of onions. Rather hurried capture as my house guest were waiting to eat it 😊 I love how joining a challenge makes you consider new things and hone your skills. I wrote a post about it a while ago on my blog if your interested to know more. Follow the # to see a whole bunch of talented food photographers and their interpretation of the theme.
